Laser Hair Removal

This procedure is performed in a medical office under the supervision of a board certified surgeon. We are the FIRST and ONLY location in the greater Columbia area to offer the latest in laser technology: The new Lumenis Light Sheer and Quantum IPL System.  This remarkable new laser will allow you to make shaving, painful electrolysis, and waxing a thing of the past.

In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair were plucking, shaving, waxing or chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are temporary. For long-term hair removal, electrolysis was the most popular choice, but this choice was painful and slow. Hair by hair, an electric current passes through a needle to destroy the hair's ability to grow. With electrolysis, it can take months or even years of regular visits-even for small areas like the upper lip. Risks include electric shock, infections, pitting, and scarring.

Now, there's a more effective solution that is quick, affordable and effective.

The Quantum IPL System reduces hair through concentrated light energy, while the Lumenis Light Sheer operates as a traditional laser. The color of the light sheer laser is absorbed by the melanin pigment located in the hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's re-growth. Importantly, the Cool Tip allows laser energy to be directed to the hair root while protecting and cooling the surrounding skin for a greater degree of efficacy and comfort.

The IPL System has pulse modes and hand-pieces to accommodate the entire spectrum of skin type and pigmentation. These features allow the laser energy to be delivered more slowly, giving a greater degree of protection to skin with larger concentrations of melanin (Types 4-6: African-American, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Indian subcontinent, Asian, etc.). This feature also allows laser use on people with suntanned skin! In clinical studies, this long pulse feature has allowed effective hair removal to be an option for EVERYONE, not only light skinned, dark-haired individuals as is the case for many of the other laser systems.

For the first time, the world's most advanced laser technology is now available to everyone.

We are pleased to be the first and only practice in Columbia to offer this new technology. Our procedures are performed in a medical office building under the supervision of a board certified surgeon. You can be assured that the latest, state-of-art technology will be used in a comfortable, professional environment to give you the best results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Hair Removal

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

Yes, it is.  The Laser is pulsed, or "turned on," for only a fraction of a second and the duration of each pulse is just long enough to disable the hair follicles.  The laser settings are designed to minimize any damage to the surrounding skin, although short-term redness is common.

Does Laser Hair Removal hurt?

The cooling tip has a mild numbing quality, which allows tender areas to be treated in a relatively painless fashion. You will feel a tingling or stinging sensation during the treatment, but most people tolerate the procedure well. Following your treatment, you may experience a sunburn-type sensation in the treated area for several hours.

How many treatments are needed?

Treatments are usually given at intervals of 4-6 weeks depending on the particular area of the body being treated and the density of the hair in that area. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment will be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase.  However, one treatment may result in a significant enough improvement that it may be all that you desire or require.

Are the Results permanent?

Our Lew Light Sheer Laser is the most effective laser hair removal system on the market.  The laser causes permanent hair reduction and delayed regrowth of the treated hair follicles.  Regrowth of hairs are shown to be thinner and lighter than before.

What should I do before my treatment to prepare?

You should not wax or tweese the hair for 2-3 weeks before treatment, because hair follicles which do not have hair shafts in them to absorb laser energy will not be killed by the laser energy.  You may shave or clip the areas to be treated the day before treatment or on the morning of treatment.  Shaving before you come in also allows you to shape the exact area you would like to have treated.  Excess hair above the surface of the skin absorbs and wastes laser energy, and reduces the amount of energy that reaches the hair root, where it is really needed.  Excess hair above the surface of the skin also increases the chance of burning or irritating the skin.  You should also stop tanning 2 weeks prior to your treatments.  A fresh tan can interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment and possibly even cause complications.

What happens after the treatment?

Within minutes, the treated area may become slightly red and puffy.  This reaction usually subsides quickly and returns to normal within a day or so.  Depending on the area treated, you should plan work or social engagements accordingly.  Around day 3-7 after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair.  This new hair growth represents other hair follicles not disabled by the most recent treatment.
