The chin is an important landmark in the facial profile. Often, the extension
of the chin is not adequate giving the mid-face and the nose a falsely prominent
appearance. A "weak chin" brings disharmony in its relationship to other facial
structures. As we age, we also tend to develop a "double chin" or "turkey
gobbler". This is due to both the deposition of fat underneath the chin and also
to the laxity of a muscle sling that suspends the tissue underneath the
chin.
Chin Liposuction Procedure
Re-establishment of ideal chin contour can be achieved by augmenting the chin
with an implant (silicone, teflon or dacron) or by making a horizontal cut in
the jaw bone and sliding the separated bone into the desired position. Both are
done through incisions hidden in the mouth. Fat can also be removed
(liposuction) or the muscle sling tightened (plastysma plication) to remove the
"double chin" through a small incision placed in the skin behind the chin.
Recovery From Chin Surgery
If chin liposuction is performed, sutures from the small external incision
hidden underneath the chin are removed in 5 to 7 days. The pain is mild to
moderate and well tolerated with pain medication. Occasionally, some mild
bruising or discoloration can occur.
Intended Results From Chin Surgery
The chin is a very important part of the facial profile. Re-establishment of
proper facial harmony can eliminate a "weak chin" or "turkey gobbler"
appearance. A well proportioned chin gives a fit and self-confident
appearance.
